Student Loan Forgiveness expansion helps graduates, rural communities

(NIPISSING - TIMISKAMING, ON) Our government is expanding the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness to graduates of 10 more eligible occupations, working in eligible communities.

Video Message from MP Rochefort regarding the expansion of the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program.

“Helping young Canadians build their futures starts with making education more accessible. The Student Loan Forgiveness Program lightens the financial load for graduates entering essential professions and equips remote and rural communities such as ours in Nipissing – Timiskaming with their much-needed talent,” said MP Pauline Rochefort.

Since 2013, the Government of Canada has forgiven a portion of Canada Student Loans for family doctors, residents in family medicine, nurse practitioners, and nurses, who choose to practice in rural and remote communities.

This year, the program expanded to include 10 new occupations where recruitment and retention challenges have a direct and immediate impact on families and community well-being. Eligible communities are defined as a rural area or a population centre with less then 30,000 residents.

“The program will also allow young professionals to launch their careers with confidence, lighter debt, and the freedom to build the future they want in the communities that need them most,” added MP Rochefort.

The expansion is expected to attract more than 2,800 professionals to under-served rural and remote communities in the coming year, strengthening access to care, education, and social services for Canadians who live in rural and remote communities.
