IWD in Nipissing-Timiskaming Uplifts Women’s Accomplishments

(NIPISSING - TIMISKAMING) Community gatherings brought together women in North Bay and Temiskaming Shores to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) in our Nipissing - Timiskaming riding. Staff members from MP Rochefort's constituency offices were thrilled to attend IWD events on her behalf.

IWD is observed worldwide, celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

"International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, leadership, and achievements of women across Nipissing-Timiskaming, across Canada, and around the world. In communities throughout our riding, I've had the privilege of meeting women who are building businesses, leading organizations, supporting their families, and inspiring the next generation," said MP Rochefort.

In Temiskaming Shores, Keepers of the Circle and the local women's shelter Pavilion hosted a gathering to honour progress, recognize challenges, and amplify voices advocating for gender equality.

In North Bay, the Crisis Centre held a free luncheon, inviting women to gather together to honour the achievement of women and meet local craft vendors and businesses who provide support for women.

"Today and every day, we recognize the progress women have made and reaffirm our commitment to advancing equality and opportunity for all. I encourage everyone in our communities to continue to work together to build a strong future for our riding and Canada, where every woman and girl can reach her full potential," added MP Rochefort.

Local craft vendors, were on hand at both events. The Canadian craft sector, which includes many women-led micro-enterprises, is a significant economic driver, contributing approximately $2.77 billion to Canada’s GDP and supporting nearly 30,000 jobs as of 2023. Canada continues to support women entrepreneurs through the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES), offering loans up to $50,000 via the Women Entrepreneurship Loan Fund for startups and underrepresented groups.

Budget 2025 in Canada strengthens support for women's equality by dedicating $660.5 million over five years to the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE). Key initiatives include $382.5 million for the Women's Program to boost economic security, $223.4 million to combat gender-based violence, and $54.6 million for 2SLGBTQI+ programming.

This funding aims to ensure sustained progress toward equality, safety, and economic prosperity for women and girls across Canada.
